The Baedeker Raid on York

1 South Esplanade

The South Esplanade......No:1 is at the small yellow estate agent's sign.

Howard Powell 13074782 was a Lance Corporal with 242 Company Pioneer Corps and was killed at 1 South Esplanade, York.
His Unit was based in Fulford and were tasked with working with the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, Royal Engineers and Royal Army Service Corps in their respective depots.
Unfortunately, their war diaries fail to show much information only stating....."Lt H G J Oliver, L/Cpl H A Powell and Pte Dallimore - killed and 1 officers & 2 ORs wounded - air raid."

No specific information has yet been discovered but it could safely be assumed that these soldiers were killed out in the open as they were assisting the Civil Defence with their air raid duties.

The above information kindly provided by Norman Brown of the Royal Pioneer Corps Association

The grave (with faded inscription) and location of L/Cpl Powell in the churchyard of St Lawrence in Tinsley.
