German Target Decoys

The Bombing Offensive

There is little doubt that German methods of passive defence - camouflage, smoke, decoy systems - reduced the tonnage of bombs that struck their intended target.

The working life of each target was thus extended but nothing could prevent their eventual destruction.

A weakened fighter force, reduced flak numbers, better Allied intelligence and the development of target marking meant that raids on important strategic targets were increasingly effective.

German industry was dispersed but attacks on the transportation systems meant it was increasingly difficult to supply the required raw materials and equally difficult to move the finished product to where it was needed.

However, incredible German resiliance enabled industrial facilities to continue production long after the Allies considered them destroyed.
