The Green Line in Cyprus

The Evacuation of Diorios

Diorios was always a mixed village where the Greek Cypriots always constituted the majority.

In 1964 the village was evacuated (shown in the video) and the Turkish Cypriots were relocated in Kambyli.

A British map of pre-1974 showing the two villages involved in the evacuation and the second village shown on the road sign........Larnaka tis Lapithou.

These are the streets where the Bedford trucks were loaded with possessions.

Despite assurances, a large part of the Turkish Cypriot section of the village was destroyed.

In Kambyli, we showed the video (and a series of stills) to a number of local Turkish Cypriots in the coffeeshop.

Amazingly, the elder man recognised people in the video.

They also recognised the coffeeshop that was shown in the video..........now much altered.

Note: In 1974, all the inhabitants (now only Greek Cypriot) fled from the advancing Turkish forces.

Later in 1974, the Turkish Cypriots (with others) returned to their homes and today, the Greek Cypriot church lies in ruins.

Note: Diorios is now Tepebaşı, Kambyli is Hisarköy and Larnakas tis Lapithou is Kozan.
