The laying of the cornerstone, 1937 and 2025

LHS: A ground radar image of the foundations showing the distinctive "U" shape with the open end facing the Great Avenue
RHS: After the war, the foundations were filled by groundwater and became the Silbersee. Huge volumes of debris from the bombing of the city filled one arm of the lake and piled up to become the Silberbuck (rubble hill).

The red area became the Silberbuck and the blue is what remains of the Silbersee (image dated 1944)

It is hard to imagine that today's Silbersee is but a small fraction of the Great Stadium's flooded foundations
The higher ground (top right) is the Silberbuck which contained hazardous material and polluted the lake with high levels of Hydrogen Sulphide

In 1986 the warning signs were more multilingual than in 2025 but the message/dangers remain the same
