The Nuremberg Rallies

Tourism and the Rally Grounds Today

The Nuremberg city authorities have struggled with the Nazi Party Rally Grounds due to a "difficult inheritance" that balances physical decay with a heavy moral responsibility.

The buildings which were designed as "stage sets" for propaganda were built quickly using low-quality, non-frost-proof limestone.
Decades of water seepage and dampness have led to severe corrosion and safety risks, forcing authorities to choose between massive repairs or closing the site.

The limestone cladding has crumbled showing the rough brickwork it was designed to cover

Maintaining the 4-square-mile site is extremely expensive. A long-term conservation project is estimated to cost €85 million with funding split between the city, the state of Bavaria, and the German federal government. There is a constant ethical concern that this work might inadvertently glorify the Third Reich or attract neo-Nazis.

Authorities have explicitly stated they will "conserve/renovate" the ruins as they are today, rather than "rebuild" them.
