This rather "ugly" set of initials refer to a German Training Area that was established in the late 19th Century.

This would have been an area of heath similar to the well known Lüneburger Heide which is now a Natural Park.

The description of the surrender location is, today, rather misleading.

However, this Training Area would have provided Monty's TacHQ with a degree of instant security with open areas and some access roads/tracks.....an ideal location.
