The Baedeker Raid on York

Phoenix Cottages, Leeman Road

The Phoenix Cottages were likely to have been built close to the Phoenix Iron Foundary (location marked with red). Two terraces of houses dating from 1873, provided housing for the workers of the Phoenix Iron Foundry in Carlisle Street.

The terraced houses in Carlisle Street (junction with Leeman Road). The garage in the foreground is clearly in an area which was previously part of the street.

See Shelter Analysis for more details of Leeman Road incidents.

Arthur Leonard Simpson Davies......aged 5

Stella Evelyn Skelton......aged 35.

Arthur Davies was from a family who lived in Selby and he was the nephew of Stella Skelton.

He is buried in Plot 3067 in Selby Cemetery.

The well tended grave of young Arthur Davies.

The author would like to thank Andy Argyle, the Resources Manager of Selby Town Council for identifying the grave and Mark Foster who led us to the location.
Their assistance is much appreciated.

The grave of Arthur's aunt, Stella Skelton, is much less visible.

Stella Skelton is buried here but her name is not recorded on the headstone in York Cemetery.
