The DDR - Revisited

Vacha

This is an area where the border followed an awkward path with interesting consequences.

The border followed the Thuringia bank of the River Werra, crossed the bridge and then continued north.

The bridge over the Werra with the white Haus Hoßfeld (a former printing works) on the far side.

On the far bank, looking back to Vacha the view today is very different to that of DDR times.

The extension of the printing works ran exactly along the border......one part of the building was in the west and another in the east. This anomaly became a frequently visited location.

In the 1970s, a DDR Border Commission saw sense and made a small modification to the direction of the border.

Today, the border line can be seen by the fact that Hessen spends more on roads than Thuringia!
