The DDR - Revisited

Kleinen/Grossensee

The two small villages of Kleinensee and Grossensee were divided from 1952 onwards.

A view in the same direction from Kleinensee towards Großensee........note the large lime tree.

The large lime tree has since died but the stump remains as a reminder.

A replacement tree now grows very close by as a continuing memorial to a Wilhelm Wehner who was shot here in 1945 by Russian troops when this was the border between US and Soviet zones.

In the distance you can see the spoil heap from the local potash mine.

A closer view of "Monte Kali" which towers more than 200m above the surrounding area.
Daily, a further 20,000 tons is added to the pile.
